WEIGELA FLORIDA 'TANGO'
This weigela cultivar is a compact, densely-rounded deciduous shrub which typically grows 2-2.5' tall with a slightly larger spread. It is primarily grown for its compact size (one of the smallest of the weigelas), profuse spring flowers and purplish foliage. Red, funnel-shaped flowers (to 1.25" long) with yellow throats appear singly or in clusters along the branches of the previous year's growth in mid to late spring, with sparse and scattered repeat bloom often occurring on new growth as the summer progresses. Elliptic to obovate leaves (to 5" long) are greenish-purple above and dark green below. Hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Needs full sun for best flowering, but will tolerate very light shade. Prune to shape immediately after flowering. Mass or group. Shrub borders. Also effective as a low hedge. May be incorporated into a foundation planting.
